Step 1
PROFESSIONALISM: The tax lawyer you choose should have a fair amount of experience in tax preparation and related legal services. This tax lawyer should also have the required educational qualifications (and then some). Your small business-your livelihood-doesn't need to be in the hands of a newbie tax lawyer looking to get his or her feet wet. (See the Resources area for help with locating tax lawyers in your area.)
-
Step 2
ETHICS: You worked hard to get your small business up and running, so don't blow it by hiring an unscrupulous tax lawyer. If you choose a lawyer who expresses any sort of willingness to behave unethically, you're just asking for trouble with the IRS.
-
Step 3
CONNECTION: Compatibility with your tax lawyer means a smoother business relationship. Choosing a lawyer who you get along with is advisable.
-
Step 4
COST: Granted, this shouldn't be your sole reason for choosing a particular tax lawyer, but cost is a factor for most small business owners and is something to consider. Finding a tax lawyer whose rate is within your budget doesn't have to mean sacrificing quality. One word of caution, though: When it comes to cost versus availability, always go with the latter. When crunch time comes, you'll want a tax lawyer who is easily accessible.
