How to Cram for College Exams
Cramming--or memorizing a large amount of information in a short period of time--has been looked at as an unwise way to prepare for an exam. However, this method of studying is very popular, especially among college students who either procrastinate or don't have enough time to devote to studying due to other classes or jobs. Though cramming seems like a simple process, there is a correct way to go about it.

1
Designate a place to study. Distractions like televisions, radios and cell phones will need to be left outside of your study area. If you live in a dorm or have noisy roommates or neighbors, try relocating to a library to study.
-
2
Gather all exam materials. These can include notes, lecture handouts, PowerPoint slides, practice exams and your textbook. Make sure you have all of the material that will potentially be covered on the exam. Also have pens, pencils and highlighting pens handy for when you come across important information.

-
3
Categorize your exam materials into sections. It might be tempting to simply go ahead and study all of your resources en masse, but your brain will be able to recall information more successfully if that information is broken up into "digestible" pieces. While studying, highlight important figures and information, or write a small summary of a section of material on a notecard. Afterward, do a quick review or give yourself a quiz before moving on to the next section.
-
4
Make time for breaks. Even small ones allow your mind to take a step back and process the information you're trying to memorize. Try to take a break after covering and reviewing one section of material. Make sure the break is neither too long nor too short. During your break, drink juice or water and eat healthy snacks like bananas and nuts to keep you mentally alert.
-
5
Try to sleep. Because many students use time that would have been spent on sleeping for more cramming, they have little to no energy during the exam. Depending on how much time you have before the exam, rest for a few hours or take a small nap to energize your mind and body. Like breaks, sleeping also gives the mind time to register the exam material.
-
6
Review. When you wake up, go over the material you studied and test your memory. Arrive at the exam location early to finish reviewing and ask classmates any questions you have.
