An easy family craft for Christmas is to make salt dough ornaments together as a family. This is a simple project that could easily become a yearly holiday tradition!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • straw
  • flour (2 cups)
  • salt (1 cup)
  • water (1 cup)
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • acrylic paint
  • toothpicks
  • cookie cutters, if desired
  1. Step 1

Assemble the ingredients. You will need 2 cups of flour; 1 cup of salt; and one cup of water.

  2. Step 2

    Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

  3. Step 3

Mix flour and salt together. Then, add 1/2 cup of water. Stir thoroughly. Gradually add the rest of the water. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes. Roll dough out onto baking paper. You can use parchment paper.

  4. Step 4

Shape the cookies. You can use the cookie cutters if you want uniform designs, or you can be creative. Make sure you make a hole with the straw so you can hang your ornaments on the tree.

  5. Step 5

Bake ornaments on baking sheet at 325 for one hour. Check at 45 minutes to make sure they are not getting too brown. Depending on the thickness of the ornaments, it may take up to an hour and a half to cook.

  6. Step 6

Cool ornaments thoroughly before decorating. Use acrylic paint and beads to decorate your ornaments. You can preserve these by painting with acrylic varnish.

  7. Step 7

String ribbon through the hole to add even more color to the ornaments. You can use a permanent marker to write initals and date on the back of the ornaments.
