Things You'll Need:
- water bottle filled with room temperature water
- a pet cat
-
Step 1
The first step is to be proactive. Try to prevent your cats from jumping up on the counters or table in the first place. Usually food is what entices their kitty curiosity. Put leftovers immediately in the fridge and wipe your table and counters often.
-
Step 2
Fill a spray bottle with water. Make sure that it's a new spray bottle intended just for water. Don't use an empty bottle from a cleaning product. You could hurt your cat. You can get an empty spray bottle at any discount store.
-
Step 3
Whenever your cat jumps up on the table, say "No" in a loud firm voice. This may be enough for some cats. One of my cats is very skiddish and juts hearing disappointment in my voice is enough to send her running.
-
Step 4
If saying no to your cat doesn't work, take out the water bottle and spray it in your cat's face. Make sure the stream is set to a soft mist, not a hard spray. The point is not ever to hurt your cat. Cat's hate being wet so all you want to do is get them to associate being on the table with something they hate. Just spray a light mist in the cat's face once and say "Down." If you have to, move the cat off the table yourself.
-
Step 5
It probably won't take more than two or three times before your cat makes the connection and stops jumping up on the table. This can actually work for anywhere you don't want the cat. One of my cats took to sleeping in my baby's crib and this technique worked great in that situation.

on 1/18/2009 Cute! My cats love water so the spray bottle doesn't work. They all get in the sink and the shower. I wonder if they think they are people?
