A major step you can take toward thrift is to build enough savings to live on for one, then two, three or more months till you have enough to live for a year. Then build up the down payment on a house. Mortgages are cheaper than rent for more space. Then pay off the house early -- but keep a year's mortgage payment's in the bank in case of medical or financial trouble so you don't lose it all. And don't move -- moving has immense costs that eat all your savings and credit.
