Whether redecorating or moving to a new home, eventually everyone has a large piece of furniture they want to move. Here are some tips to make this task easier. Does this Spark an idea?

If your moving furniture around your home there is a great invention called "furniture movers". No, I don't mean the big guys with the truck. Furniture movers can usually be found at your local home improvement store. These are also known as "sliders". You put them under the feet of your furniture and then you can slide your furniture around on the floor.

If you don't have furniture movers, another technique to try is using a blanket or towel under the base or legs to slide the furniture around. This works well on hard surfaces such as hardwood floors or linoleum.

    • 3

For moving large furniture that needs to be lifted, do what the pros do and use "lifting straps". These are special straps used by two people that distribute the weight based on leverage, which not only makes the job easier but prevents back injuries. Some are made to go over your shoulders while others are used on your forearms. See the links in the resources below for more information.

Other handy items are hand trucks and furniture dollies. Be sure the ones you are using can handle the weight capacity of the furniture you are moving.

    • 5

Remove any loose sections from the furniture and move it one piece at a time. For example remove the drawers from a large chest.

    • 6

Always have a firm hold of the piece you are moving and lift the furniture from it's strongest point. If moving a table you would want to lift it by it's top and not the legs.

    • 7

Protect surfaces that may get damaged. This may mean covering the floor with a protective barrier or wrapping furniture in moving blankets. Also use straps to secure anything that may fall or just for added stability.

Prevent injuries by lifting with your legs and not your back. Bend your knees instead of bending at the waist when picking something up. Try to avoid twisting and always take your time.
