How to Find the Right Jeans For Your Body Type

Shares & Saves

Just as there isn't one body type, there isn't one pair of jeans that flatters all women. Even though one-size-fits-all denim doesn't exist, you can find the right jeans for your shape if you shop with your body type in mind. The perfect pair of jeans creates proportion and balance, while emphasizing your best features and hiding any problem areas.

Denim for Hourglass Shapes

  • If you've got curves, you want your denim to hug your body in all the right places without being too tight or unflattering. Hourglass shapes feature a substantial bust, fuller hips and a slim waistline.

Choose jeans with a wider bottom to balance out your hips. Wide-leg trouser styles, bootcuts and flared jeans are flattering styles.

Always choose a mid-rise or high-rise cut so that there is ample room to cover your curves. Look for styles with at least 8 or 9 inches between the crotch and the waist. Also choose a contoured waistband that fits your slim middle and prevents gaps.

Pear-Shaped Styles

  • When you're pear shaped, the widest part of your body is the hips. Dress in denim that deemphasizes this area to create a flattering silhouette.

Avoid tapered and skinny jeans, which visually add bulk to your widest section. Instead, choose bootcut and flared pairs of denim. These styles add some width to the bottom of your jeans, drawing the focus away from your hips. Your silhouette will be better balanced when there's more width around the ankle.

Choose a mid- to high rise jean, as these styles are less likely to gape at the waist.

Jeans for Straight Body Shapes

  • A pair of tight-fitting skinny jeans only emphasizes straight body shapes. Add some faux curves to your frame by choosing jeans that are looser. Boyfriend jeans create this illusion.

Jeans with a slight flare or bootcut will further create a curvier figure. Lift your backside by choosing a pair of jeans with distinctive seams around the pockets.

Straight figures can get away with wearing low-rise jeans because they emphasize the hips -- a feature that you might wish to play up if you're straight from head to toe.

Flattering Cuts for Apples

  • Apple body shapes carry weight around the midsection, so taking the focus away from the jeans' waistline is a smart styling move.

Choose a dark-wash denim in a classic style: bootcut, trouser or flare. Avoid any embellishments, such as rhinestones on the pockets. Simple styles work best and create a clean, sleek line.

Look for jeans that feature shapewear technology, which will help create a smooth and flattering silhouette. These styles can help minimize any muffin top and keep your jeans at your waistline throughout the day.

Opt for a moderate-rise waistline, which keep your midsection contained. Low-rise styles risk having your belly spill over your waistline.

Petite Pants

  • If you're petite, choose a slim fit pair of jeans. Skinny jeans jeans are ideal for your shape.

Narrow your search among these denim options to a pair that best elongates your legs. Dark-wash skinny jeans, for example, can create the illusion of longer legs. Look for ankle-length cuts, which will fit your shorter legs well, and help you avoid a trip to the tailor.

Avoid loose-fitting boyfriend jeans or rolled-up jeans with wide cuffs, which your petite frame can get lost in. Capri-length denim may also cut your leg line, so opt for a pair that hits to your shoe to elongate your look.
