Troubleshooting DSL Modems
Broadband usage at home and at work has increased over 400% in the past five years. Technology has enabled the average consumer with the ability to purchase and setup their own DSL high speed networks in the home without dedicated technical support to complete network setup and get online. Unfortunately, with the explosion of technology has come the expectation for the average user to be able to diagnose and troubleshoot network issues before reaching back for support. Many DSL modem issues can be rectified by the consumer without highly paid technicians to assist with the problem.
Instructions

-
1
Connect the computer directly to the DSL modem if using a router to distribute the Internet connectivity throughout the home or business.
-
2
Verify all modem cables are inserted properly into the modem (i.e. pushed all the way in). Do this by removing and reconnecting all cables. Also check to ensure that none of the cables are damaged or cut. Then, ensure the power cord for the modem is plugged into the modem as well as an electrical socket with power available.

-
3
Reset the power to the DSL modem by turning it off. Leave the modem off for at least 30 seconds. If the modem does not have an on/off switch, you will need to remove the power cord form the wall socket or power source.
-
4
Verify that if your DSL modem has a standby light it is not in this mode. If your modem has an indicator light for being on the Internet, check to see if it is Green, Yellow, or Red. If the light is green, then there is likely a software configuration issue than a hardware issue.
-
5
If your modem status light is not illuminated, or indicates a bad connection, the DSL connection issue is likely either the modem or the phone line connecting the modem to the phone line. Replace the phone line next. If the modem still does not work, call your ISP to request an off-site test and if required, replacement of the modem.
-
6
If the modem and phone cable test satisfactorily, the next link to check is to replace the Ethernet cable that is connecting the computer to the modem.
-
7
If the connection is still failing, try to use a second laptop to test the DSL connection. If the second laptop works, then the software configuration or internal networking hardware on the previously used computer may have issues.
-
8
Re-run the DSL modem installation CD. Use any wizard function offered. If the DSL connection continues to fail, contact your ISP for further troubleshooting.

Tips & Warnings
To identify potential modem issues, remove the router and connect the computer directly to the DSL modem. If the computer has wireless connectivity, disable the antenna to prevent inadvertently connecting to a neighboring wireless network that does not have encryption.
If troubleshooting slow connections, verify the computer does not have a virus or spyware before commencing troubleshooting.
