Instructions

    • 1

Ask your children what colors they want their bedroom painted. Most children have a favorite color and should have no trouble letting you know. Don't be surprised if they want bright and bold colors in their bedrooms.

    • 2

Wipe the walls down to get any dust that might have collected in the corners.

    • 3

Move the furniture out of the room and cover the window panes, light switches and door handles with painter's tape. You should also put a plastic drop cloth on the floor. If you are going to leave any furniture in the room then make sure it's wrapped up or covered in plastic to keep paint off of it.

Use a coat of white primer on the walls and ceiling first. This will cover up stains like water stains, ink or crayon and will help keep woods like cedar or redwood from bleeding through a coat of paint. Use a ladder and a paint roller and tray for the ceiling and hard to reach parts of the walls.

Decide which type of paint finish you want in the children's bedrooms. How old they are can make a lot of difference in which finish you use. Satin finish is better for small children because it is more durable and stain-resistant. A flat paint is recommended for older children because they usually don't have as much wear and tear on their walls.

Paint the walls and ceiling in the colors your children have picked out. Use the lighter colors on the ceiling and walls and then paint the door and wall trims and windows with a darker color for a pleasing contrast. If there is carpet on the floor try to get colors that will compliment the entire room.

Draw a mural on the walls of the kid's favorite theme or cartoon. This can be done freehand or by buying stencils and outlining first. Once the scenes are on the wall, paint them the way you want.
