Step 1
First, verify if the agent you are dealing with is licensed. In many states, insurance agents have to include their license number on their business cards and on all marketing materials they provide you with. Contact your state's Insurance Commissioner and ask for verification of the agent's license.
-
Step 2
Enter the agent's name into a search engine and check what comes up. Has the agent cheated other clients? Did he or she over-promise and under-deliver? Is he trying to get the best deal for his clients?
-
Step 3
Finally, ask the agent if he can provide you with any references from satisfied clients. Speak with one or two of these clients and ask them about their experience.
-
Step 4
There may be two simple ways to shorten this lengthy verification process. Contact either a car insurance company or an insurance agent association and ask them to put you in touch with an insurance agent in your area. Agents recommended by insurance companies and agent associations are usually legitimate and meet all the legal requirements.

on 3/6/2009 So you ask for 'the agent' for references....do you believe they will give you a bad one. Highly unlikely.
