How to Lower Your Auto Insurance Rate

Lower Your Auto Insurance Rate
Lower Your Auto Insurance Rate

Is there anything you can do to lower your auto insurance rate? You bet there is, and chances are that your insurance company doesn't want you to find out about it. If most of the company's clients willingly pay whatever is asked, it makes sense to provide discounts only to those who are actively seeking them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask your agent or company what you can do to lower your rates. Be persistent. Request a list of available discounts and threaten to switch to another company if you can't find a way to lower your auto insurance rate with your current company.

  2. Step 2

In addition to some of the better known discounts for good students and senior citizens, many insurance companies provide lower rates to clients who install an anti-theft device in their car, who take a safe driving course, or who simply increase their deductible. Increasing your deductible from $500 to $1,000 can lower your auto insurance rate very significantly.

  3. Step 3

Driving less and maintaining a good driving record will get your premiums reduced with most companies. If you're a very safe driver you might benefit from installing a device in your car that reports your driving habits, such as when, how fast and how safely you drive, to the car insurance company.

Tips & Warnings
  • If everything else fails, get several quotes from other insurance companies and obtain a new policy from a company that offers to lower your auto insurance rate.
