You may need a modest wedding dress that will fit the requirements of your church. You may just not feel comfortable showing everything in front of your groom's family. A standard bridal gown shop may only have low cut or sleeveless dresses. Here is how to find a modest wedding dress that will still make you feel attractive.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask the bridal shop if they have a fall & winter line. Even if you are getting married in the spring or summer these dresses will still fit the bill. You can have a full length sleeve shortened to a 3/4 sleeve.

  2. Step 2

Tell the dress shop attendant your dilemma. They may offer to take a sleeve off of another dress so you get a custom made gown that fits your modesty requirements.

  3. Step 3

Switch departments. You can find inexpensive white dresses in the prom section of the store. These have a wider variety of modest necklines. You may even find a slinky lace dress in the mother of the bride section.

  4. Step 4

Find a dress that has a matching shawl or wrap. Even if you don't want to wear it on your big day you may have enough material to take to a dress maker to see if they can fashion sleeves.

  5. Step 5

Shop vintage. Check thrift stores or ebay to find vintage wedding gowns. These dresses often had sleeves & impeccable beading & lace. You may find exactly what you want for half the price.

Tips & Warnings
  • To feel like a modern bride, less is more. This doesn't mean showing more skin. If you have long sleeves, choose a simple silhouette so the dress doesn't overwhelm you.
  • When you shop for vintage dresses you may have to settle for an ivory instead of a bright white gown depending on the age of the garment.
