An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is used for tax purposes, for businesses. Sometimes, it's referred to as a Federal Tax Identification number. You may apply for an EIN online, over the phone, by mail or by fax. First you need to determine if you need an EIN.

Things You'll Need:

  • Employees
  • A Corporation or partnership
  • Sole Proprietor
  1. Step 1

    You can go to the government site, irs.gov to apply online. When you feel out the online application you will receive your EIN immediately. You can call customer service and apply over the phone. You may also print out the online application (SS-4) and mail or fax it in.

  2. Step 2

    You may go to irs.gov to view the taxpayer handbook to answer any questions you have about your business and tax responsibilities.

  3. Step 3

    There may be reasons that you need to get a new ein number or cancel your current number. It is important that you understand all aspects of the tax law to avoid penalties and fines.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have questions or concerns you should call, Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933.
  • You should never use your EIN in place of your social security number.
