How to Get Smoky Eyes With Makeup

Achieving the look of sexy, elegant, smoky eyes is simple with the right set of tools and instructions. This look is ideal for going out to a black-tie event or just a simple night out with your friends. Get it done in under 10 minutes by doing it yourself with the following suggestions.

Things You'll Need

  • Regular foundation Multi-tonal eye shadow palette, 4 colors Small angled makeup brush Cotton swabs Black mascara

    • 1

Pat regular foundation across the entire eyelid and under-eye area before using any shadow. This primes the lid as a base so the shadow will stick.

    • 2

Dip the tip of the small angled makeup brush that is damp into the darkest shadow in the palette, usually a rich dark brown or black color. Draw a thin line with the shadow across your lower and upper eyelash lines.

    • 3

Look up and blink your eyes before the liner shadow dries to create a mark in the crease of your eyelid. Between this crease and the rest of your eyelid, apply the contouring shadow, which is the second darkest shadow on the palette (usually a dark coppery color).

    • 4

Rub the second lightest shadow from the palette, usually the softest color, above the creases and up to the brow bones. This works as a highlighter.

    • 5

Apply the very lightest color from the palette, usually a creamy, pearly white, around the corners of your eyes to reflect light and make them seem larger.

    • 6

Trace over the original liner shadow one more time with the darkest color on the palette, and smudge it with a cotton swab to make a smoky effect.

    • 7

Brush off fallen shadow from the under eye area, than curl your eyelashes and coat on dark black mascara.
