Donating items or money to charity is a smart way to save on income taxes, but not all charities qualify. Learn how to find out what the IRS considers an Eligible Charity for Income Tax Deductions.

  1. Step 1

    Visit the IRS's directory of "Eligible Charities". A direct link to this site is listed in the Resource section below this article.

  2. Step 2

    Enter the important information about location and as much of the charity's name as you can recall. You can also select the deductibility code if you choose.

  3. Step 3

    Find an eligible charity for income tax deductions by clicking the "search" button after you have entered the important information. This will result in a list of charities the IRS recognizes.

  4. Step 4

    View the results the IRS's Eligible Charity search provides for a charity that interests you and might be interested in what you have to donate.

  5. Step 5

    Help in using the search engine is available at the bottom of the engine.

Tips & Warnings
  • If an organization isn't listed as an eligible charity it might still be eligible. Contact the IRS to confirm the status of a charity.
  • You donations must be made to an eligible charity or you will not be able to claim them as a tax deduction.
