Instructions

    • 1

Determine your ring size. Slide a ring that fits over the ring mandrel. Note where it "fits." This is where you will build the ring.

    • 2

Aqcuire silver solder, a torch, flux, a firebrick, and a third hand. Not a literal third hand but a little clamp on an extendable and bendable arm. You will also need a ring mandrel and some metal files.

    • 3

Get silver wire in 4×1, 3×1, and 2×1 dimensions. Silver stock, obviously, is the first material on the list. To make silver rings you need some pretty specific materials.

    • 4

Place the silver on the flux, which should be above the firebrick.

    • 5

Apply heat via the firebrick, which will allow the silver to bend. Essentially, this process is to mold the silver into the desired ring, and this may take a few tries in order to get comfortable with working in a rather dangerous condition. However, with some gloves, goggles, and awareness of your surrounding, it should be a safe and easy step.

    • 6

Continue to apply heat to the silver in order to get a smooth round edge. Once you feel the ring is smooth enough, allow for the ring to cool.

    • 7

Place the silver ring on a surface that will not be burnt or charred, for example stone or marble is best.

    • 8

It can be filed off easily. Fire scale is a coating on the metal, usually white or red, that forms when you get metal very hot. There will be a bubble on either side of the join from the solder and there might be some fire scale. When everything has cooled down, use your files to clean up the ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use caution and protection when haandling with open flames and hot conditions.
