Getting fresh juicy tomatoes this winter will be fun and easy if you grow your own indoors! Typically, tomatoes this time of year are imported. If you can find local hot house tomatoes in your grocery store they are going to be pricey! Here's how to grow your own tomatoes from seed this winter in your home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase your seeds online or at your local nursery if you can find them. You should look for dwarf tomato seeds or container plant seeds. They should grow between 12 and 24 inches.

Start germination in small containers. Many nurseries sell seed starter kits if you prefer to do it this way. Be sure to follow the directions on the seed packet for proper planting.

  3. Step 3

Once the seeds sprout about 6 leaves or two inches, replant them in a planter suitable for the expected growth of the plant. I prefer to use organic soil for any plants I expect to eat.

  4. Step 4

Bring the planter to a warm sunny spot in your home. You will need to water this plant every other day. Be careful not to over water or you will get root rot or the plant may become moldy.

  5. Step 5

Generally, these dwarf tomatoes will take about 3 months to produce fruit from seed indoors.

  6. Step 6

If you plan ahead, these beautiful tomato plants will make excellent gifts when they start to bear fruit. Think outside the box this year!

Tips & Warnings
  • Mother's Day, Father's Day, Birthday's, Teacher Appreciation, Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent opportunities to give one of these plants as a gift.
