Make your very own Pinata in the size and design you want!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Balloon
  • News Paper
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Paint or Colored Tissue Paper and glue (or paste)
  1. Step 1

    Prep:
Inflate your balloon to the size of pinata you want and tie off.
Tear several sheets of newspaper into pieces no larger than 4" in any direction.

  2. Step 2

Make a natural flour paste with 1 part flour to 1 part water. You may want to vary the amount of water depending on how thick you want your paste, but for best results, make it slightly thinner than toothpaste.

  3. Step 3

Hang your balloon from its neck. I use a black binder clip (found at an office supply store) with string tied into both of the metal loops.

  4. Step 4

Coat your newspaper pieces with a thin layer of paste and place them on the balloon. Cover all of the balloon except for a 3" hole around the neck which will be used to put candy in the pinata. After making one layer, allow it to dry over night.

  5. Step 5

Add two more layers of newspaper, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next layer. Otherwise your pinata will get soggy and lose its shape.

  6. Step 6

Once dry, decorate your pinata. You can paint it with 2 coats of paint or, for a more traditional look, use tissue paper. I cut the tissue paper into 1" squares and use the dull end of a pencil to dip the squares in glue and apply them to the pinata. Put a small hole in a sturdy part of the top of the pinata and pull string or fishing line through so you can hang your pinata.

  7. Step 7

Last, you will fill your Pinata with candy and apply a patch over the neck opening. I use 4 layers of tissue paper to make my patch and cover it with tissue paper using the same method in step 6. This gives the pinata a consistent finish.

Tips & Warnings
  • For faces, try construction paper and large "gogley eyes"
  • Make sure to TAKE PICTURES of your pinata before it is destroyed. You will never get that work back!
