Step 1
Take measures to assure yourself you're dealing with the right website. Some sophisticated scam websites pose as the website of an insurance company but all they do is collect your data so they can use it to commit identity fraud. If you actually try to buy auto insurance from one of these sites, they will sell your credit card data to scammers and soon thereafter strange charges will start to appear on your credit card statement.

Step 2
It's easy to identify the legitimate websites of major insurance companies as these companies have well-known domain names that are widely advertised. Insurance agents and insurance comparison websites are much more difficult to verify. If you have any doubts, enter the agent's or comparison service's domain name into a search engine together with the word "scam" to see if there have been any complaints.

Step 3
Don't act on spam emails you might receive. Preferably use search engines to find car insurance agents and car insurance comparison websites. Scams are usually promoted by spam and are shut down before they reach a high position in the search engines. The higher a website's search engine ranking, the more trustworthy it is.
