How to Leash Train a Puppy

Before you begin any other training with your puppy, you need to leash train your puppy. This establishes you in the leadership role and helps your puppy to understand that they must pay attention to you when you are offering instruction to them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puppy
  • Collar
  • Leash
  • Liver Treats
  • Clicker
  1. Step 1
    Get a Puppy Collar

    Get a Puppy Collar

Fit your puppy with a quality collar. Allow the puppy to spend some time getting used to having a collar around their neck before you add the leash. You want them happy and calm when you being your leash training.

  2. Step 2
Stand Still While Puppy is First Leashed

Attach a short leash or rope to your puppy's collar and stand still while you hold it. The puppy will soon realize that they can not move from that distance away from you without your 'consent'.

  3. Step 3

Attach your puppy's leash to your belt so that as you move about the house, your puppy will need to pay attention to your movement and follow along. This also helps with house training so you're doing double duty dog training here.

  4. Step 4

Place a longer leash on your puppy and move to a large yard with little to no distractions. Set puppy down and walk away. If puppy follows, reward them with praise after taking several steps. If puppy does not follow, move to the end of the leash's distance and call the puppy. Offer some homemade liver treats as encouragement. If you have to, move closer to your puppy and take this part short distances at a time. Always use the 'come' command when doing this.

  5. Step 5

Move away from puppy each time they get up to you and receive their treat. Begin using the 'heel' command once the puppy is beyond the point of freaking out over the leash being attached to them and willingly follows you. Click your clicker and reward the puppy with a piece of homemade liver before they lose interest. Eventually, you will want to move away from using the liver and using only the clicker.

on 12/28/2008 Good tips! Our puppy is doing pretty well with the leash...but the biting...would love an article on how to get a puppy to stop biting! (It is really annoying the cat).
