Paper snowflakes are a seasonal decoration loved by children and adults. They look great on windows, on cards or set back on the inner branches of a Christmas tree. This project is an easy one to do with your kids or students and uses minimal supplies.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 ½-by-11-inch paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Coffee can or other round, traceable object
  1. Step 1

Find a round object such as a coffee can or large candle and, using the pencil, trace as many circles as can fit on a sheet of unlined paper. Use the scissors to cut out the circles.

  2. Step 2

Fold a circle in half and then into thirds as shown. This will give you a 6-pointed snowflake. For a more complex 8-pointed snowflake, fold the circle in half, then in half again and then again for a total of three folds.

  3. Step 3

Cut notches into the folded wedge of paper with the scissors. This is the part where you get creative. Each snowflake is different, so trim and cut as you please, doing it a little different each time.

  4. Step 4

Unfold the paper into the snowflake and flatten out the creases. You now have an individual creation. It's always a surprise as to how it will look when you open it, which is part of why kids love making these paper snowflakes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Making a large notch at the top of the folded wedge will create a more distinctive snowflake, as it defines the points and limbs of the snowflake when opened.
  • Always monitor young children with scissors.
