The straight right is the second-most elementary punch in boxing and the fundamental power punch. Many boxers have built entire, championship careers simply off of having a good 1-2 combination: a great jab coupled with a rocket right hand. It is a must in any well-rounded arsenal.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Handwraps
  • Boxing gloves
  • Heavy bag
  • Full-length wall mirror
  1. Step 1

Stand in front of the wall mirror and assume the proper boxing stance. For a beginner, this stance requires you to place your feet roughly shoulder-width apart, with your left foot leading and knees slightly bent. Your guard should have your left fist placed slightly before your face, with the knuckles on a line with your eyebrow and your right fist alongside your face, with the right knuckles on a line with your cheekbone.

  2. Step 2

Practice putting your weight into motion. There is an old saying that all good punches start at the ankles and your straight right will be no exception. Begin this by practicing propelling your right side off your right foot. Imagine the motion you would use to grind a cockroach or squish out a cigarette. From your stance, make that motion with your foot and pay attention to how your body weight moves.

  3. Step 3

Connect your foot to your hips. Once you have a good feel for putting your weight in motion from the ankle up, carry the movement up into your hips, continuing to turn your weight towards the right and push it forward. At this stage, you should still not be throwing a punch, but simply practicing getting your weight forward.

  4. Step 4

Add your arm. Once you have a good idea of what it feels like to have all that weight going forward, add your arm. Your shoulder should complete the motion begun at the feet, with the forearm turning over in a snap to provide extra concussion.

  5. Step 5

Return your fist to your face at once, to guard against a jab thrown over the top of your right, or a counter left hook.
