How to Zip a File with Windows Zip (WinZip)

If you want to send many large files together at once, you will have to compress those files into a Windows Zip file. Follow these step-by-step instructions for how to zip a file using WinZip. Click on thumbnails for enlarged screenshots!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Zip (WinZip). Link to free download provided below.
  1. Step 1
    Open WinZip
     
    Open WinZip

    Go to the start menu and open WinZip.

  2. Step 2
    Welcome!
     
    Welcome!

    Click "Next" on the "Welcome to the WinZip Wizard!" screen that pops up.

  3. Step 3
    Create Zip File
     
    Create Zip File

    Select "Create a new Zip file" and hit "Next".

  4. Step 4
    Name Zip File
     
    Name Zip File

    Type in a name for your Zip file in the "File name" field. Note in which folder your Zip file will be saved on your computer so that you know where to find it later! It will most likely be saved in the "My Documents" folder.

  5. Step 5
    Add Files
     
    Add Files

    Click on "Add Files..." and select the file(s) you want to add. You may add as many files as you like!

  6. Step 6
    Zip Now
     
    Zip Now

    Click "Zip Now."

  7. Step 7
    Finish
     
    Finish

    Click "Finish".

  8. Step 8
    Access File
     
    Access File

    To access your Zip file, navigate to the folder where it was saved (refer to step 4).

Tips & Warnings
  • If you use Microsoft Outlook and want to attach your Zip file in an e-mail, right-click on the file and select the option to e-mail your Zip file. A new message will open with your file already attached to it!

on 12/18/2008 Good reminder how to zip files. I use this often when I'm sending out large attachments in email. It's easier to upload when the files are compressed.
