How to Obtain a Birth Certificate

Your birth certificate is one of the most important documents you will own.

One of the most important documents that you'll receive in your lifetime is your birth certificate. Having your birth certificate can come in handy when you're trying to prove your identity when applying for a social security number, for travel or for immigration. The United States federal government doesn't provide copies of a birth certificate, so you'll have to apply directly to the state in which you were born.

Instructions

1. Determine the state, province or territory in which the birth occurred, which is where the birth was registered, and visit the corresponding birth certificate request website.

2. Gather necessary documents to submit along with your application. Most states require at least one or two documents, one of which must be photo identification. Sometimes a state will require a document confirming a person's current address. If you're applying by mail, you will need photocopies of these documents.

3. Apply in person, by mail or by fax (if offered). Most birth certificate application forms are available online. You may, however, visit the necessary government office and fill out the form in person. Make sure to provide all necessary information on the form and provide the necessary processing fee.
