There are many styles of kites, which means many different ways to draw kites. If you've never drawn before, please start with the first example. If you're more experienced, there are a few more complex kites to draw. Most of all, have fun, and try to give your kite a true "kite" personality. Make it look like it is soaring and playing in the air.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

    Drawing a Basic Kite

  1. Step 1
Basic shapes for a basic kite.
Basic shapes for a basic kite.

Start off with the basic shapes. The main shape of the kite is a diamond shape. The string isn't so much a shape as it is a line. The Tail can be straight like a ribbon or can even be another string with small bows on it, like 2 triangles joined.

  2. Step 2

Draw your diamond shape. Make sure it's a little bit longer at the end. Criss cross your kite shape, as a real kit has strings attached here.

  3. Step 3

Draw your string. This should be a curved line.

  4. Step 4

Draw your tail however you'd like, and as long as youd like. This should be a bit curved, as if it were blowing in the wind.

  5. Step 5

Color your kite whatever color you'd like. You are done! Enjoy.

  6. Drawing other Types of Kites

  7. Step 1

This kite (see image) is one that is seen many times at the beach. It is different from the basic kite, but can be drawn in the same way.

  8. Step 2

Draw the basic shapes. In this case, it is two triangles, a line for the string, and a long curved ribbon shape for the tail.

  9. Step 3

Draw them as in the first process, join the triangles, with a slight curve at the bottom to show that the kite is catching air. Draw the string in a curve, and the tail also curved.

  10. Step 4

Here is another kite to try-start off with basic shapes and try to draw it. It looks more complicated, but really, with the technique shown, it is four triangles meeting to make the butterfly shape, and a line for the string, and the long rectangular, moving shapes for the tails/streamers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have fun with your drawing. This will read in the final drawing.
  • Don't be stiff. This is a kite, so make your lines very playful.
