How to Make a Box of Chocolates More Interesting

A box of chocolates is one of the most popular gifts on the planet, but its presentation as a gift can get stale. It's often accompanied with flowers or a card, which pale next to the candy. For special occasions, it's nice to put a twist on how you deliver this old standby to loved ones to prolong the enjoyment of opening the gift.

Instructions

Wrap or decorate the box in an unusual way. Some suggestions are: wrapping three different colored ribbons around it; tying springs of fake flowers to the bow; weaving seasonal decorations--like fake cranberry branches, leaves, sprigs of spruce or holly--into the ribbon; wrapping it in pretty recycled paper that you've written birthday or Christmas greetings on; printing pictures of the person from the computer and using them for the wrap; and using an inexpensive print of a favorite work of art for the paper.

Secure an ornament that would make a neat or usable keepsake. You can attach pencils or a box of chalk for a homeroom teacher's gift, tape a few golf tees to a Father's Day package, top a chef's present with a cute cooking utensil, or tuck knitting needles through the paper for your aunt who loves craft work.

    • 3

Tuck a second gift within the box. You can neatly fit gift certificates, jewelry, handwritten poems, cards, mini books, or other small items underneath or among the candies. Make sure it doesn't misshape the box or make it hard to put the lid back on.

Take a pen or marker. Write notes on the paper wrappers that sit beneath the chocolate. Tell your girlfriends all the things you love about her. Thank your mother for baking your favorite carrot cake when you were growing up. Remind your brother how he used to steal your Halloween candy.

Revamp the concept of a box of chocolates. The container doesn't have to be filled with candy. Make the gift different by filling it with other chocolate-covered items, like coffee beans, vegan candies, brownies, candy bars, strawberries, or fudge.

Design your own box. Hit up an art supply store like A.C. Moore or Michael's. Buy one of their plain wooden boxes. Paint it, neatly glue decorations to it, line it with velvet, and stack the candy inside. Your fiancée could get a red one lined with lace ribbon, and your kid sister can get a pink one covered with Hannah Montana stickers.

Consider what other containers would make for a good present. Buy a jewelry box and tuck the chocolate within its compartments. Get a photo box, put a picture of the two of you on top of it and stick the candy inside. By a boxed sampler of different teas, and rearrange them to fit the chocolates.
