Step 1
Get a job at the bottom of the rung. If you are trying to break into a new industry, you can often easily get an entry-level position and work your way up. Make sure that your new employer knows you are open to learning and want to work your way up as quickly as possible. A good employer will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
-
Step 2
Contact your city hall and ask about local commerce groups in your area related to your desired career. Use these contacts to find a mentor that is willing to teach you what he/she knows. This is often the best type of career training, as you will learn first hand the dos and don'ts of the trade.
-
Step 3
Consider applying for internships. Some are unpaid, and some might offer pay. An internship is a great way to learn a new career and looks great on a resume. Internships also help you establish business connections and get your foot in the door.
-
Step 4
Ask local colleges and training centers about available scholarships and grants. You might be able to find college funding to get free career training.

on 1/7/2009 These are great ideas. Most people do not think about career training when they are laid off.
