1
Start out by going to the Mary Kay website to search for a consultant in your zip code, or search by name if you are aware of a consultant in your area or even a consultant who is not in your area. Mary Kay consultants are nationwide so, if you have a friend in another state that is a consultant, feel free to join her team!
-
2
Inquire with the consultant about starting a Mary Kay business. She will be willing to help you every step of the way and can either send you the online invitation, or you can meet with her in person to have her fill out the consultant agreement with you.

Start out by buying your starter kit. The cost is $100.00, but the contents are worth well over $300 in retail products. The starter kit typically takes 7 to 10 business days to arrive at your door. There will be DVD's, literature on products as well as marketing your business. There will also be facial kits, including mirrors and trays for your customers to try the products out. The starter kit also includes samples as well as full size products. The full size products included are usually the Miracle set which consists of Timewise cleanser, moisturizer, day and night solution, and several different shades of foundation. These products are ready to sell if you choose to sell them right from the start; otherwise, you can use them yourself or provide them as samples for customers.

Read your literature, get to know your products, and flip through the business guide to get better ideas of how to conduct skin care classes and product preview parties. Also it is helpful to familiarize yourself with the products if you are not familiar already, so try the products out, use them and see the results on your own skin. The consultant who uses the products will be more successful at selling them to others from the firsthand experience she will receive from using the products.

Start selling! Hold a debut party at your home; invite everyone you know -- friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Don't hesitate to invite someone for any reason, because everyone can benefit from using Mary Kay products. Your sales director will typically attend your debut, so be sure to set the date around both of your schedules, but don't wait too long: the sooner you inform your family and friends that you are a new beauty consultant, the sooner you can begin to make money!
During your debut, you should display the products from the business kit (if you have not already placed an order for products from Mary Kay), put out some samples, and, as people walk in the door, let them try the Satin hands set; this will immediately get them trying the products and focus their attention right onto you.
Present the products and explain what each one is best for. Don't forget to tell your potential customers about how and why you decided to start a Mary Kay business, because this might give them ideas to start their own on your team (this is explained further in the Tips section of this article).
After presenting, offer people a gift if they book a facial, skin care class or product preview party with you!
-
6
Place your first order with Mary Kay. The order must be at least $200 in wholesale (that is $400 in retail), and Mary Kay will also offer you incentives to buy more products by giving free gifts and recognition for your sales; however, spend within your means. Be sure to order look books and samples with your order (these can be found in section 2 of the order form); this will help you in marketing your business.

7
Set up your personal website through Mary Kay In Touch. There is a small fee for the web hosting, but it is well worth it to allow your customers to view the product line via their own computer! Also check out MK connections to order your personalized business cards and name tag.

8
Visit your local grocery stores, hair salons, churches, car repair shops, banks, tanning salons and drop off product samples as well as look books. Never hesitate to ask anyone if she wants to try a product or hold a product preview party or skin care class. Talk with your local groups such as the Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary, to see if they would welcome you to a meeting so that you could show your products and do a presentation.
Please do not be discouraged if a person says "no" to you; you will receive more "yeses" than no's! -
9
Build your team! Ask a friend if she would like to become a consultant: the more team members you have, the more Mary Kay gives you!
