This article describes the refurbishment of an Antique Mantle Clock. It will show the dismantled parts. It will describe how to clean the clock case prior to paint. Most antique dealers would recommend not refinishing antiques because that diminishes their value.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of spray paint.
  • Face breathing mask.
  • Cleaning supplies.
  • TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate).
  • Small screwdrivers.
  • Pliers.
  1. Step 1

    First thing is to acquire a can of spray paint. In this case Gold was chosen. Here though you can choose any color you like.

    It is best to dismantle the clock. Make notes and draw diagrams if need be to aid in putting the clock back together. The clock case parts can be put in the dishwasher. Or they can be rubbed down with TSP and water. About 1/2 cup TSP to gallon of warm water. Rinse off, towel off and dry thoroughly.

    There are surprisingly few parts to the clock. This image, plus the previous image shows all of the parts.

    Spray paint the major parts in the disassembled condition. Let dry thoroughly and reassemble the clock. Wa La, the clock is like new again.

Tips & Warnings
  • TSP is available in grocery stores, hardware stores, paint stores, etc.
  • Spray paint is available from hardware stores, craft stores, paint stores, etc.
  • Do this job on a desk top or table top to avoid losing parts.
  • Most antique dealers would recommend not refinishing antiques because that diminishes their value.
