Things You'll Need:
- A helpful bystander to act as your assistant. Depending on where you are(and your confidence in this procedure) this could be anyone from an older child to passerby.
-
Step 1
Select someone to assist you. For young children I would suggest a parent or caregiver, someone they trust. For adults who have previously used this method almost anyone can be used to assist.
-
Step 2
Face your assistant. Instruct your assistant on the following steps. It is very helpful to have a calm, reassuring person acting as your assistant.
-
Step 3
Plug your ears. Using your assistant's finger tips gently press the ear flaps to the ear canal. You should adjust your assistant's finger tips to assure a snug fit around the ear canal.
-
Step 4
Hold your breath for 20 - 30 seconds. I would suggest taking a normal breath first. Taking in a large breath could immediately cause a hiccup.
