Car speaker boxes prevent speakers from rolling around or hanging by their wires. Speaker boxes will also protect speakers from loosening their wires and damaging their sound. In order to make your own speaker box, be prepared to invest at least 5 hours, though it is a relatively easy task.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill and screws
  • Sander
  • Wood glue
  • MDF (medium density fibreboard) Wood
  • Table saw
  • Putty knife
  • Air compressor or brush
  1. Step 1

Determine how big the box will need to be. Make sure the speaker will be able to fit in the box and make sure that the box would be able to fit into the trunk or door of the car.

  2. Step 2

Cut the box for the speaker with a table saw, with the wood pieces cut to measurements taken in Step 1. Set height of the blades to the saw by having the tips of the blade meet halfway up to the board. Cut two pieces for the sides that will be smaller or the same size as the top and bottom, depending on the size of the speaker.

  3. Step 3

Measure the front of the speaker. The diameter of the circle should be cut into the front board. The back board will need a small square cut out in order for the wires to go through the back.

  4. Step 4

Test the fit of the speaker and assemble. Mock the box and make sure that it is the way you want it. Brush off the pieces of wood using an air compressor or brush. Pre-drill the screw holes. You will drill coarse-threaded screws into the holes after gluing.

  5. Step 5

Glue wood together. Leave to dry for an hour. Drill the screws in the holes, then re-glue on the insides to fill in the cracks.

  6. Step 6

Sand and finish the box. Put putty over the screw holes. Let it dry for several hours. Sand the box until it is smooth (sand in a round motion).

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use too much putty on the screws. You will then need to scrape some of it off before sanding.
