Care for a Rosemary Bonsai Tree

Proper care is important for maintaining a healthy thriving Rosemary Bonsai Tree. Without the proper care the life of a bonsai tree can be short lived.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watering: To properly water your Rosemary Bonsai tree- every 2 to 3 days place planter inside 1" to 2" of water and allow to soak for approximately 1 hour or water until soil is thoroughly saturated and it begins to seep from base of planter. Note- You can tell when it requires watering by the feel and look of the soil which will become dry and light in color.

  2. Step 2

Proper lighting: Indoors-A Rosemary Bonsai tree will require between 2 to 4 good hours of sunlight. So, place accordingly in a windowsill or other well lit location where it can receive the proper amount of sunlight.

  3. Step 3

Pruning: About every two years, during the spring, your Bonsai tree will require its roots to be pruned. In order to prune your tree's roots: gently remove the potting soil from around the roots and carefully trim off 1/4 of the entire length of the roots (never prune more then 1/4). - Be sure to always re-pot after pruning with clean, healthy, well draining and nutritious soil.

  4. Step 4

Trimming: Pinch back older growth as needed to promote new growth.

  5. Step 5

Pest Control: For fungi and pest control be sure to spray your Rosemary Bonsai tree down once a month with a sulphur based spray.

  6. Step 6

Fertilizer: Fertilize every 4 to 6 weeks with a half dose of regular plant food such as Miracle Gro.

Tips & Warnings
  • The shoots from a Rosemary Bamboo tree can be removed and used for seasoning.
  • Stay away from toxic chemicals and ingredients when choosing a pest and fungi control method.

on 10/18/2009 I just received a rosemary bonsai. The soil was adequately moist when I received it, so I did not need to water it. I placed in in a sunny room, but not in direct sunlight. About 3 or 4 days after I received it, I noticed the top of the soil was white and fuzzy. Does this mean it was too wet? How do I prevent this? Also, is it normal for some of the green leaves to drop off. Thanks for any help.
