One of the hottest trends in dressing for a wedding is dying a plain white crinoline a bright, bold color. The crinoline usually remains hidden to the guests until the first dance, when it takes them by surprise. Learn how to dye a crinoline or slip for wearing under a dress.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric Dye, such as Rit
  • Large Glass Container
  • Rubber Gloves (optional)
  • Crinoline or Slip
  • Top-Loading Washing Machine
  1. Step 1

    Set your top-loading washing machine to the hottest cycle possible, as well as the longest cycle possible. Fill the machine with the hot water.

    Once the machine has filled, dip the crinoline into the water, soaking the crinoline slip completely. Then set the crinoline aside, making sure that it is not bundled up and the fabric is loose and free.

    Wearing rubber gloves to protect your hands, pre-mix the fabric dye according to manufacturer's instructions in the glass container. Then pour the dye into the washing machine.

    Put the crinoline into the dye bath. Allow it to agitate for at least 30 minutes. Manually reset the agitation cycle if a darker color is preferred.

    After the agitation has finished, let the crinoline go through the rinse cycle.

    Hang the crinoline to dry. Repeat process if a darker color is preferred.

    Clean the washing machine by running an empty cycle with only detergent and one cup of bleach. This prevents inadvertent staining or dyeing of other clothes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to check the fabric type to ensure the dye is compatible with the fabric of the crinoline.
  • Wear rubber gloves to prevent staining of the hands.
  • To achieve dark, bold results, more than one package of dye will be required.
  • Thoroughly clean the washing machine to prevent unwanted dyeing or staining of regular clothing.
