Flip the watch over and examine the caseback. Many counterfeit Rolex watches are designed with a 'skeleton' caseback, which allows you to see the inner workings of the watch. Rolex does not make any production model watches with glass backs.

Examining the caseback further, note if the caseback of the alleged Rolex is engraved. Many counterfeit Rolex's will have a variety of different engravings on them. Rolex does not produce such watches. They always have a smooth caseback with zero engravings.

Purchase a new Rolex and your watch will have a hologram sticker on the back of the watch. The hologram will have the crown logo with the serial number of the watch underneath it. Rolex redesigned the hologram stickers in 2002 to include the crown logo. At this time, the serial numbers were also printed in black vs the earlier versions which were printed in gold.

Look for the serial number located between the lugs (where the band attaches to the watch face). On an authentic Rolex, the serial number will be a jeweler's quality etching that shines smoothly. The counterfeit will likely be an acid wash type of engraving that is not at all shiny.
