Step 1
Clean out a milk jug or other large container to collect the money you are saving for a vacation. Label your container as "vacation money" so you will be reminded what exactly you are saving your money for and not be tempted to dip into your stash. Place your container so that it is easily accessible, you will be adding your vacation stash money daily.
-
Step 2
To start saving vacation money, do not use your change. Instead, always round up your purchase amount and pay in dollars. Every day, empty your pockets and purse and place your change in your vacation fund jar. If you can afford to throw all your one dollar bills in too, this will quickly add up and give you a very nice vacation fund.
-
Step 3
When writing checks or using your check card, always round up to the nearest dollar in your checking ledger. Use the balance listed in your ledger, and leave the rest for your vacation fund. This will also quickly add up for your vacation money. Do not give in to the temptation throughout the year to touch that money, remind yourself you are saving money for a vacation!
-
Step 4
Use coupons! You can find coupons in your local newspaper, or print coupons online. Keep track of your coupon savings, and add that amount to your vacation money jar. In the course of a year, this can add up to substantial savings for your vacation fund.
-
Step 5
When your vacation fund jug is full, start another. If you start doing this as soon as you are home from your vacation, this will add up to a tidy sum. Search around for the best vacation deals, or even just go camping, to further stretch your vacation money. And whatever you do, don't touch that money until you are leaving for your vacation! If you must borrow from the vacation fund, be sure to pay it back.
