Lawyer Complaint in Alabama

The last thing anyone wants during legal proceedings is to begin another legal process. When it comes to filing a complaint against your lawyer, it can be even more of a headache. Alabama residents have the option to file a complaint against a lawyer simply, without retaining another lawyer for the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact the Alabama State Bar Disciplinary Commission. The commission is in place to investigate and regulate unethical and/or unprofessional conduct by lawyers.

  2. Step 2

Fill out a complaint form. You can find the lawyer complaint form at the Alabama State Bar website, or you may request one. Fill out one form per lawyer and complaint. If there is a law firm involved, you must specify individual attorneys for investigation.

  3. Step 3

Get your complaint notarized. This ensures that it is your signature on the complaint. Be sure to send the original to the Alabama State Bar as they do not take copies of your signature. Do make copies of the complaint for your records.

  4. Step 4

Keep all your paperwork. Maintain a file of all paperwork and correspondence related to the case your lawyer was working on prior to the complaint as well as all documents related to your complaint.

  5. Step 5

Know that your complaint will be investigated by the Alabama State Bar. If any further action is considered appropriate, the Bar will send a copy of the complaint to the lawyer so that he or she may write a response.

  6. Step 6

After both sides of the complaint are investigated, the Alabama Disciplinary Commission will decide whether further action is to be taken. You will be notified of the findings and whether your complaint warrants additional investigation and proceedings.

Tips & Warnings
