Step 1
Watch for things in the text that need further clarification. Often the desire is to glaze over these things and not acknowledge them, but they could give way to a deeper meaning.
-
Step 2
Look up the reference in a bible dictionary. Often it will not be in there. If it isn’t, you know that there probably is not any deeper meaning.
-
Step 3
If there is a reference in the bible dictionary, read it. There usually is some sort of customary or spiritual significance to the reference.
-
Step 4
See how this information works into your study. It often will give a deeper understanding of a text or even provide clarification where it may have not made sense before.
-
Step 5
Usually there will be additional references in the bible dictionary. For instance you may have found that a word appears in your study in Acts and then looked it up in the bible dictionary. You then find that it is used in Mark also. Read through these other passages as part of your study to see if there is a deeper significance to the word.
-
Step 6
A bible dictionary often provides pictures which will help you to visualize what you are reading. This is especially helpful when you are studying a place.
