Step 1
Break the topic down into one word. The bible concordance is not built on phases, rather single words. For example id you are studying 'The Eternity of Hell,' you would simply want to look up 'Hell'.
-
Step 2
Go the page in the bible concordance for that word. It is sorted alphabetically like a dictionary. Some words will have several pages, where others may only have a couple entries so it can be challenging to find the word.
-
Step 3
Read through the list. There will be an excerpt from each verse containing that word along with the book, chapter and verse number.
-
Step 4
If any of the verses in the bible concordance look like they are topically the same as your study look them up.
-
Step 5
Read a block of text when you look up a verse, not just the verse. This will help you to understand the context of the passage so as to not misuse the verse.
-
Step 6
Look up variations of the words. If you choose to look up 'Eternity' and do not find what you want, try looking under 'Eternal.'
-
Step 7
Look up synonyms. For example, you may choose to look up 'Gahanna' or even 'fire' instead of 'Hell.'
-
Step 8
Some bible concordances will have a Greek and Hebrew dictionary. This will allow you to look at the intricacies of the word definition in order to understand the original intent. You can also use a Greek or Hebrew bible concordance which would allow you to look up areas that the original word was used rather than the translated word. There is bible software which is really handy for this too.
