If you teach Sunday school or Junior Church, you know that getting kids to return is a weekly battle. Here are some tips to keep them coming back.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have a plan and be organized! Nothing will turn a kid off more then not having something to do. If you don't have an organized plan, the students will become bored, fidgety and problems will arise. Plan enough activities to cover any extra time that may occur in the class.

  2. Step 2

Make it Fun! Your lesson should be exciting, told using visual aides when possible.
You can also use illusions while you are doing the lesson. Try to get the students involved in the lesson using questions.
Use games, crafts and music as often as possible.

  3. Step 3

Give them a hook! Tell them what you have planned for the next week, lesson, games etc.. give them just enough information to make them curious.

  4. Step 4

Give them incentive. Use attendance charts and give out perfect attendance certificates as well as a prize at the end of each month.

  5. Step 5

Use refreshments. Refreshments are another incentive children will look forward to. You can do this at the beginning or near the end of class.

  6. Step 6

Schedule activities at least once a month. You can do this on Saturday afternoons or evenings. Movie & Munchie nights are always a big hit.
Always invite the kids to join you the next day in class for more fun.

  7. Step 7

Send Postcards to keep them informed. Children love to receive things in the mail. Send postcards for any reason you can find. Birthday, Holidays, Get well, missed you this week, are all cards you can find a your local Christian bookstore or online. Always includes an invite to class and the next activity on each postcard.

  8. Step 8

Visitation. If you are able, visit your students and visitors. It is a good idea to schedule or call ahead of time to ensure that the child and at least one parent is home. Never visit a child that is home alone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never compromise teaching for too much fun, make sure your students are learning.
