Step 1
First, make a stocking pattern by tracing around an old Christmas stocking or drawing it freehand. Don't forget to make allowances for seam widths.

Pin the pattern to the jeans fabric and cut out two pieces. Before sewing the pieces together, decorate the stocking front with your chosen medium, such as embroidery, applique or painting.

Step 3
With right sides together, sew around three sides of the stocking, leaving the top open.

Step 4
Turn the stocking inside out, press and topstitch, if desired. Take an old flannel shirt belonging to another family member and make a cuff for the top of the stocking.

Step 5
Sew the cuff to the stocking, turn and press. Embroider or paint the child's name on the cuff, and sew on a ribbon loop for hanging.
