Lip balm protects lips from chapping in weather that's cold and dry. Homemade lip balm allows creative people to experiment with mixtures and scents. The most popular main ingredients are beeswax and Vaseline (petroleum jelly). Beeswax is firmer and less messy, making it ideal for homemade lip balm, while Vaseline is best for lip gloss.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 tbsp. beeswax
  • 2.5 tbsp. jojoba oil
  • .25 tsp. essential oil
  • 8 lip balm containers
  1. Step 1

Grate the beeswax so it can be properly measured, then combine it with the jojoba oil. Stir the mixture in a double boiler, over low heat. It can also be heated in the microwave, inside a Pyrex container, for 30 sec. increments.

  2. Step 2

Once the mixture is just melted, remove it from heat immediately. Stir in the essential oils of your choice. Scents you use could use range from lavender to mango. Certain ones are great for aromatherapy, like jasmine and sandalwood, and they'll even be oh-so-conveniently placed right under your nose.

  3. Step 3

Pour the melted mixture into each container, nearly to the top, keeping a small amount in reserve. Wait two minutes, and make sure the reserve lip balm stays melted. Then top off each container. Your homemade lip balm will be firmed up and ready for the first application within thirty minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only use cosmetic grade beeswax.
  • Make sure your containers have been sterilized with rubbing alcohol.
  • Add small bits of new lipstick for color; newer sticks have fewer germs.
  • If you don't have a double boiler, place a pot in another filled with water.

on 12/16/2008 Seems easy enough, I should try it. My kids always destroy mine so I stopped buying it but this might be a good solution. At least I'll know exactly what it is they've eaten if they get to it again ;)
