Many college freshman experience some weight gain their first year of school, commonly known as the "freshman 15." Here are some ways to not only avoid this menace but also maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, one must always stick to a decently healthy diet. While away from home, it is much easier to go out or order pizza than to actually cook. These are just a few ways to eat healthy:

1.)Most campuses have a dining hall or cafeteria. These actually have somewhat healthy food, as long as you don't rush to the pizza every meal. Be sure to add variety and try new things.

2.)Eating out/delivery is not only unhealthy, but it can also get expensive. Try to limit this habit to 1-2 times a week.

3.)Snacking can be a college student's best friend or worst enemy. Most students tend to snack while studying. Keep healthy snacks in the dorm, like low-fat popcorn and water/juice instead of sodas, and you are sure to cut some calories.

  2. Step 2

Having an exercise routine will scare those extra pounds away from the scale. You don't have to be an exercise fanatic or a gym member to stay active. You won't even realize you're exercising if you keep these tips in mind:

1.)Try walking to class. This is easier when you're on a small campus. If you are on a larger campus, then drive to your classes but park at the far end of the parking lot.

2.)Instead of elevators, why not use the stairs? It is sure to give you a small workout, especially going up. If your class or dorm is several floors up, then take the elevator halfway and climb the stairs for the rest. Always take the stairs when going down.

3.)Try exploring campus. Maybe do a nature walk. Take your camera with you, and capture some random shots. (You may even develop a new hobby with photography.)

  3. Step 3

One detail people forget is being sociable. This may seem ironic during the school year, but here are some ideas to take into consideration:

1.)Get involve with different campus activities, such as sporting events. They are a great way to relax and meet new people.

2.)Maintain a small group of steady friends. The first year of college can seem overwhelming, but with a few people to rely on, the transition may be less stressful.

3.)Being alone can cause a student to become homesick, which could lead to depression. Depression is not good. It tends to cause more stress and possible over-eating. Being involve with other people makes this situation easily avoidable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Exercising isn't always fun but bringing a friend will make it more enjoyable!
  • Being social has it's benefits, but being too social will have it's downfall. Remember to prioritize: don't be so social that you don't study and fail your next exam!
