It is every young girl's dream to walk around town in a gorgeous pair of high heeled pumps. Finally, when that girl comes of age, she acquires her first pair, picks out the perfect outfit, puts those shoes on, and realizes she has no idea how to walk in them. This article will help girls of all ages figure out how to walk in their perfect pair of high heels!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A few pairs of fantastic high heeled shoes in varying heights
  • A treadmill
  • Strong calf muscles
  • Confidence!
  1. Step 1

The first thing you will need to do is to get used to the idea of walking with your weight shifted slightly forward on your feet. It is very important to get used to this feeling before you put on your first pair of three inch heels and teeter uncomfortably in public! In order to do this, I suggest walking on your tip-toes in either bare or sock feet in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Stick with this step until you get used to having your heels elevated and the ball of your foot compressed. Not only will this help you gain your balance, but it will also help strengthen your calf muscles, which is a must for a whole day spent in stilettos!

  2. Step 2

Once you are comfortable walking on your tip toes it is time to strap on the sass! For your fist pair of heels, I recommend using a shorter heel, no taller than one inch. A kitten heel works best for beginners. Kitten heels are only slightly elevated, but are ideal for getting used to walking on the small point of the heel. Spending a day in these shoes will help you gain a feel for walking with your heel on a point. You will be able to navigate shifting your weight so that your ankle does not roll on account of balancing your heels on a surface area smaller than a dime.

  3. Step 3

Before you are ready to get kicked up onto the tall heels it is important that you prepare yourself indoors before you go outdoors. The easiest way to prepare yourself for that fabulous pair of four inchers is to get your feet in gear on the treadmill. Put your shoes on and step up on the treadmill. Put it on the lowest setting so you are moving at a slow walking pace. Place your hands on the side rails to help aide your balance until you are comfortable to let go. After you have mastered the first speed, increase it. Always keep your hands on the side rails so you won't wobble and fall down. Once you are able to get the treadmill up to average walking speed and feel comfortable with this, walk around your house, navigating corners, stairs, and different flooring. Walking on carpet is much different than walking on hard wood, cement, or linoleum. Doing this will help you gain skill and confidence in your ability to walk in your shoes, as well as to help break them in. Nothing is worse than walking in high heels when you have blisters.

  4. Step 4

Congratulations! You are now ready to go outside! I would recommend walking around in your heels outside around your house before taking them out on the town. This will help you gain a feel for uneven sidewalks and bits of gravel that may end up under your feet. Also, if your heel does not have any traction on the sole, I would recommend rubbing your feet hard on the pavement to scuff the soles of the shoes, as this helps aide in traction to prevent slipping. Wear your heels out on short outings and dates at first. Remember, when you are out on the town you can't just take your shoes off if they are pinching or you are feeling uncomfortable. Wear them out to a nice dinner or someplace where you may be doing a lot of sitting or standing in one place if walking is still uneasy for you. Each time you wear your shoes you will gain confidence in them, and in yourself! Mostly, remember to have fun and to pick your shoes wisely. A shoe can say a lot about a person, and it is the most important accessory for any woman!

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you get the hang of walking in high heels, try to wear a pair at least once a week to keep your balance and calf muscles. Walking in high heels is like riding a bike, you'll never forget, but you can get rusty!
  • If you do not feel completely comfortable in your shoes, do not wear them! There are plenty of dressy flats out there that can spruce up your outfit. If you are uncomfortable, you won't be able to enjoy yourself no matter where you are.
