How to Build a 4 Wheel Furniture Moving Dolly

A furniture dolly is an important tool when you are moving heavy pieces of furniture. You don't have to go out and buy one, though, because building one yourself will only take an hour or so. This platform will be easy to tilt to get the furniture on and off and very easy to maneuver around.

Things You'll Need

• Wood 2-by-4s
• Plywood
• Screws
• Drill
• Piece of indoor/outdoor carpet
• Carpet adhesive
• Rope
• 4 3-inch swivel plate casters

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of plywood 18 inches by 32 inches. Cut the 2-by-4s into four sections: two pieces should be 32 inches long and two should be 10 inches long.

2. Screw the two 32-inch pieces onto the plywood. Lay them down so they are 4 inches wide and only 2 inches in depth and screw one piece onto each side of the plywood. Screw the remaining 2 pieces between the side boards to form a square on the bottom of the plywood.

3. Glue a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet to the top of the plywood and over the front of the frame. This will protect your furniture from getting scratched by the wood and make it easier to slide on and off.

4. Drill two 1/2-inch holes through the carpet and the frame on each side. Put each end of a 6-foot section of rope through the holes on the top. Tie each end of the rope into a knot so it won't come back through the hole. You may want to paint some adhesive on the knots to keep them from coming undone. This rope will help you pull the dolly.

5. Screw the casters to the bottom of the frame. Place the casters in the front, about 3 inches in, so you can tilt the dolly. Place the rope-side casters about an inch in. Now it's ready to go to work.

Tips & Warnings

• The length of the rope should be comfortable for you to stand up straight and pull. You may want to adjust the length to where you feel comfortable.
