A well behaved dog is only as good as their trainer. One of the most basic commands given to a dog is the sit command. This command can be used in a number of different situations. This article will demonstrate the sit command.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A dog
  • Small training treats
  1. Step 1

First, attach a leash to your dog's collar. This will help keep your dog focused. Second, make sure you have the small training treats in your pocket for a fast reach.

  2. Step 2

Then, if your dog is not making eye contact already; gently tug on the leash and state the command. For example, "Sidney sit". As you are stating the command, place the small treat right above their nose. By placing the treat above their nose, the dog will lean their bottom to the floor.

  3. Step 3

Once the dog's behind has touch the floor (they are in a sitting position), give them the treat. Make sure to only state the command once. If they don't respond the first time, gently push their behind to the floor while keeping the treat above their nose

  4. Step 4

Lastly, make sure to tell your dog "good girl/boy".

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to only state the command once. Repeating the command before the dog actually sits confuses the dog. The dog needs to hear the command once in a strong voice.
  • Do not start training a dog until the dog is 10 weeks of age.
