Increase your child's chances of successful potty training by dressing her appropriately to encourage independence.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Elastic waistbands
  • Simple underwear
  1. Step 1

Ideally begin your potty training in the summers when your child can simply run around outside naked. Then he doesn't have to worry about taking off difficult clothing when he feels the urge to go.

  2. Step 2

To encourage a little more modesty, simply put your child in underwear with either a t-shirt or a sundress over it. Then all she has to do is pull down the underwear when she needs to go.

  3. Step 3

When going out in public, boys can wear shorts or pants with elastic bands. To keep girls more modest, they can also wear shorts underneath their dresses.

  4. Step 4

When weather gets cooler, girls will want to cover their legs when wearing dresses and skirts. Tights are often difficult to pull down, so opt for leggings, instead.

  5. Step 5

Avoid dressing your child in clothes with buttons, snaps, zippers, buckles, etc., until he is quick enough to recognize the urge to go to the bathroom. It takes too long to fumble with those fasteners and he will be crushed if he accidentally wets his pants after arriving at the toilet in time. Also avoid putting your child in onesies to keep her warm. Those snaps are difficult even for adults, let alone children!

  6. Step 6

Prepare your child for eventually wearing snaps, buttons, zippers, etc. by having her practice as often as possible. Use dress-up clothes, dressing frames, or dress-up dolls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use incentive charts to encourage your child.
  • Be consistent!
  • Avoid using Pull-Ups. They are nothing more than diapers that slide up and down with ease. They can confuse the child.
