With the holidays upon us, why not take the time to make creamy mashed potatoes from scratch? They are sure to be a hit!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 large potatoes
  • 1/3 c. butter
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 2 Tbs. sour cream
  • 1 tsp. garlic
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • Large pot
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric beater
  1. Step 1

Peel six large potatoes and slice into 1/2" thick pieces. Half the potatoes if they are very wide. Larger pieces will take too long to boil.

  2. Step 2

Bring a large pot of water to a roaring boil (covering the pot can make it boil faster). Boil potatoes for approx. 30 minutes or until a fork can easily slide into the potatoes and separate them.

  3. Step 3

Drain the potatoes and transfer into a large mixing bowl. Add butter, milk, and sour cream. Use the beater to mash the potatoes down by hand a few times to reduce splatter. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

  4. Step 4

Beat in the garlic and onion powder. You can also add cheese, salt, and pepper, if desired.

  5. Step 5

Serve with gravy or plain. These potatoes are yummy alone! Makes approx. 10 servings.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a low-fat version, use non-fat milk, low-fat sour cream, and low-fat margarine and omit salt and cheese.
  • Test a few potatoes to check when they are done. Sometimes potatoes cook unevenly.
