How to Apply Eye Shadow on Lower Eyelids

You can enhance your eyes by applying light eyeshadow to your lower eyelids. You should never put eyeshadow inside the inner rim of the lower lid. If you do, the shadow can slip into your eye, causing irritation and even infection. Since the lower eyelids are so small, it's important to keep your eyeshadow application very light. If you do it right, the shadow there will make your eyes stand out quite nicely.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a thin eyeshadow or liner brush. If you have an eyeshadow brush set, use your smallest brush for your lower eyelids.

    • 2

Choose neutral colors for daytime wear. Soft blacks, warm browns and taupe shades work well for lower eyelids. Use bright colors like blue, green and violet for bold, nighttime looks.

    • 3

Place a small amount of eyeshadow on the brush. Keep application light on the lower lids to avoid overwhelming the eyes.

    • 4

Dot the shadow directly underneath the eyelash line, beginning at the outer portion of the eyelid. While you can apply the shadow in a straight line, this can actually make your eyes appear smaller.

    • 5

Do not apply eyeliner to the inner half of your lower eyelid, unless you have wide-set eyes. If you line the enter lower lid, it can close off your eyes, making them look less noticeable. If you have widely set eyes, lining the entire length of the lower eyelids will make your eyes appear closer together.

Smudge the eyeshadow, using a cotton swab or your fingertip, to create a smoky look. This makes for a more dramatic effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dip your eyeshadow brush in water before putting eyeshadow on it, if you wish for a stronger look. The water will make the shadow appear bolder.

  • Sensitive eyes may be irritated by eyeshadow on the lower eyelids. Choose hypoallergenic eyeshadow to avoid issues.
