Create a Linux Live CD
Create a Linux Live CD

Try out Linux without changing your PC. It's really easy, but proper installation is required.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A PC with CD or DVD drive
  • A blank CD or DVD
  • An internet connection
  1. Step 1

Find a Linux distribution that has what you want. Go here to find a list of Linux distributions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions.

  2. Step 2

Download the correct file. A lot of Linux distributions are downloaded from a FTP page so the proper file will ALWAYS end in .iso

  3. Step 3

Download a disk image burner. You cannot do this by just dragging the file into the CD. SOFTWARE IS REQUIRED. I will recommend InfraRecorder.

  4. Step 4

In InfraRecorder click on Write Image and find the .iso file. Use the default settings and click ok.

  5. Step 5

Wait. The larger the file size, the longer it will take. Most will take only about 5 minutes so be patient.

  6. Step 6

With the finished disk in the drive, restart your system. When you get the opportunity, boot your PC from the disk. Most of the time you will see "Press F2 to Setup" "Press F12 for boot menu" during the boot.

  7. Step 7

If done correctly, Linux will start. It's boot will look weird, but it is correct. Enjoy Linux.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some Linux distributions cannot be made into a Live CD, so look on the distribution's website.
  • Before you install Linux to your hard drive be sure to back up your files.
