Make the Best Cat Toy in the World

Cats don't care how much you spent on a gift- they just love playing with something fun. An empty box might get more attention from a cat than a nifty toy you picked out at the pet store. Not to mention the fact that they might demolish the toy quickly anyway. Felines can't resist seeing something moving away from them, especially if its something on a string...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • String or yarn
  • Feathers and/ or bread-twisty-ties
  • stick
  1. Step 1

So I present to you "fishing for kitty", as a friend calls it...
You need a stick that's about 2 feet long, and a piece of yarn or household twine, a little bit longer than the stick. Tie the yarn to the end of the stick.

  2. Step 2

You now have your "fishing pole" and you just need to "bait" it. This is where you can be creative: pick something small that your cat likes- this can be a feather, a small catnip mouse, a little pom-pom, or even those little twisty-ties that come on bread bags. Just make little spring-shapes with the twisty-ties and attach it to the string. Same goes with whatever you're using- tie the feather or catnip mouse onto the end of the string.

  3. Step 3

Now you can just drag the toy in front of the cat and he or she will give chase. This is also a really helpful way to get kitty inside if you just lure them in- they won't even mind going inside because they'll be having too much fun.

Tips & Warnings
  • Feathers are probably the best kitty bait, with small catnip toys a close second.

on 1/8/2009 Lightsinger, when I was a kid in Alaska, someone next door caught a 7 ft-long Halibut. That's crazy!! I'm glad that everyone is liking this kitty toy. I just switch out the little toy at the end to keep them interested. Winter time is definitely a big time for kitties to be playing. Unless they're indoor kitties, and so they don't care what's going on outside with the weather!

on 1/6/2009 As long as you don't go fishing for a cat over 100 pounds your good! ha ha!
My cats loved your little game, and it was a belly full of laughs for me! Thanks1

on 1/5/2009 My cats love the plastic ring that comes on a milk carton -- I find those things all over the house! Your fishing pole is a great idea -- fun for the cats and easy to make.

on 12/25/2008 I couldn't agree more, cats can have fun with some of the most simplest things. We bought our cat a nice bed to sleep in, I don't think she's ever stepped paw into it. But we started packing up stuff one day to give away and the next think we know she took over the cardboard box. Aluminum foil balls are great too, just make sure they're to big to swallow.
